Boy/October/War reissues *** (Island)
In a nutshell: Boy is not as good as one might have remembered.
Sure, Out Of Control and I Will Follow are tops, but Shadows And Tall Trees is embarrassing. The bonus CD is the best of the three.
October is every bit as awful as it was when it first came out -- a second album that found Bono and friends floundering in a sea of Christian rock.
With hindsight, War was always going to launch U2 into the big time. Sunday Bloody Sunday and New Year's Day are huge and potent, but the best song is the under-rated Seconds.
Even Niall Stokes, in his liner notes, has a pop at some of the album's less successful moments. Newsflash -- Hot Press editor in U2 swipe shock.
