Such strange noises coming from an accordion and a banjo

Four over-60s from Athenry, Co Galway, have become a hit on YouTube by performing a punk rock song.

Uploaded to the web site last week, the video for Let's Go To The Beach is now getting up to 500 hits a day.

But while Athenry vet Frank Brody and his three friends sing the song on-screen, the soundtrack is actually supplied by a Canadian band, The White Wires.

It was Frank's son, Giles Brody, who directed the promo, having come up with the idea of creating a video for the Canadian punk band starring his father's trad band, which normally performs in Hansberry Hotel in Athenry.

"They filmed us about a month ago and I still can't get over the reaction to the video. People have been coming up recognising us in the street," Frank told The Diary this week.
