Southern rockers still under the radar

english oceans

Drive-By Truckers have ploughed a distinctly Southern, countrified rock path for almost 20 years although they remain somewhat under the radar.

This 12th album may not swell their fanbase, but it's a decent collection that showcases what this band, fronted by Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley, do best.

The predominantly acoustic Made Up English Oceans rollicks along engagingly while Til He's Dead or Rising illustrates Hood's and Cooley's gifts for storytelling and character creation.

While some of the tracks barely register, others demand your attention. And in the lengthy album closer, Grand Canyon, the Alabamians deliver a stunning song equally informed by the death of the band's crew member last year.
