Room to improve on debut release
room for light
Rising Irish singer-songwriter Gavin James is currently touring the UK with this comparative newcomer, and just as the Dubliner is likely to be everywhere in 2014, it may be similarly difficult not to be aware of this English troubadour.
There's considerable craft to Keen's folk-inflected songs, which ruminate on the pleasures and pains of daily life, but Room for Light is a largely run-of-the-mill collection that doesn't mark the singer out from the pack of young men with acoustic guitars.
Still, there are plenty of green shoots including the lovely title track and the single, Trouble, which will have most humming along on second listen.
It's just a pity that nobody has told him to go back to the drawing board with at least half-a-dozen of these songs.
