Robbie Williams sent his father in his place when he was honoured in his home city of Stoke-on-Trent.

The Sun reported that the Angels singer was being celebrated with a blue plaque on the street where he grew up, unveiled by the Lord Mayor.

The council has also announced plans to give the Take That star the freedom of the city.

Robbie's dad, Pete Conway, attended instead of the singer and read out a message from his son, who lives with his wife Ayda Field and daughter Teddy in Los Angeles.

"I'm proud to come from Stoke-on-Trent. I'm extremely honoured and grateful that you think it fitting to give me this recognition," The Sun reported him as saying.

"PS: My daughter's first word was mummy, her second was duck! She's a Stokie!"

Robbie, who is set to turn 40 later this month, said that he was "gutted" not to be able to attend the celebrations, marking his birthday, but that his wife had planned several days of birthday bashes.
