Prince has just released a new single exclusively on Spotify only weeks after he pulled his entire catalogue from the streaming service.

Entitled "Stare," the track has the Purple One’s signature funky sound, and features a direct reference to another fan-favourite "Kiss".

At 3 minutes and 43 seconds, the song is among the few recordings by Prince available on steaming services following his decision remove his music catalogue from all services except Tidal – which is owned by Jay Z and more than a dozen other artists.

The artist officially asked all streaming services to remove his catalogue at the beginning of the month.

Apart from “Stare”, Prince's Spotify page only featuring tracks that have appeared on third party soundtracks.

The artist’s attitudes toward streaming has been difficult to pin down.

He was one of the first to release an album for digital download with 1998's Crystal Ball but he quickly soured on the form, famously declaring: "The Internet's completely over."

"I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won't pay me an advance for it, and then they get angry when they can't get it,” he said in 2010.

"Stare" comes hot on the heels of news that Prince Prince's band 3rdEyeGirl would release a new album titled HITNRUN this year.
