Prawn festival seeking singing superstar and thrill seekers

While most aspiring singers headed off to the Dublin auditions for X Factor, those blessed with a decent set of pipes should also consider entering this year’s Prawn Idol.

The Clogherhead Prawn Festival is running a singing contest for amateurs aged over 18 and for just €10, locals can participate in the festival’s very own search for a pop star.

The prize pool is this year worth €3,000. Heats are currently taking place and anyone interested in entering the contest should call John on 086-1795070 or Orla on 087-2797901. For more information, see the Prawn Idol page on the festival website.

But the country’s annual crustacean festival which runs from July 16-18 has plenty of other unusual activities including a charity bungee jump for the RNLI.

Interested participants need to raise €200 in sponsorship for the chance to take place in the 65m jump from the pier.

Organisers are asking for those looking to take part in this event, to register their interest ASAP to avoid disappointment.

Sunday will also see swimmers take to the water for the annual 2.5km 'Round the Head' swim which begins at Clogherhead Lifeboat Station at 2.30pm.

The entry fee is €10 with a proportion of the donation going to the RNLI.

Those wishing to brave the open sea are strongly advised to do at least a 2km swim in the sea or two 1km swims in the months leading up to the event.

Anyone looking to enter the swim should email Ray at
