Pop Corner: Timber's flying as top pop stars align
The stars are already attempting to align themselves for 2014.
With every Tom, Dick and boyband slapping a Mumford and Sons banjo onto their tunes and newcomers from Ella Eyre to Sam Smith playing the 'real music' card, big names are thinking of new ways to push themselves.
And in times of pop crisis it's always best to rely on star power.
Pitbull has mastered the "rope a big name in to sing the hook" trick and he's just bagged another number one in the UK and US (and a big hit over here) with Timber featuring Ke$ha.
It's a clever way for Ke$ha to keep her name in the charts when she struggled to land a second hit from her underperforming sophomore LP last year. Timber flying to the top of the US chart as Ke$ha checks into rehab for an eating disorder makes it bittersweet.
Even with personal struggles the pop machine rumbles along and it's obvious Team Ke$ha don't want her lost in the fray.
Rihanna is another star unable to take a break. At the end of 2013 her reunion with Eminem created another hit in Monster and this week she teams up with Shakira for Can't Remember To Forget You.
It's an interesting move for both. Rihanna has had more hits than most but is still content to pop on other artist's songs between albums, while Shakira, a huge name internationally, is a platinum selling pop star who surely can sell a song on her own.
For fans these team-ups are fun but it's telling that such moves are becoming more and more common in the race to land a hit.
Only a few weeks into 2014 we've already got a burning pop question: "Which stars will be the next to do a blockbuster collaboration?"
