Niall Horan has shrugged off rumours that One Direction are heading towards a split, with a light-hearted video in which he bigs up his Irish brogue.

The Mullingar pop star dressed up as an old man complete with a wig, flat cap and wire-rimmed glasses in a funny video shared by his bandmate Liam.

He jokes about not hitting a sliotar against a newly-painted wall in an exaggerated country accent before hobbling off-screen.

The video was shared under the title of: "This should lighten the mood."

It seems the 21-year-old isn't too bogged down by speculation that there is trouble in the One Direction camp.

Earlier this week Zayn Malik quit the band's tour of Asia due to stress. The singer jetted home to spend time with his family.

It is not yet clear if he will rejoin the group but it is believed he will be back on stage for an upcoming date in South Africa.

"Zayn has been signed off with stress and is flying back to the UK to recuperate," a representative said in a statement. "The band wish him well and will continue with their performances in Manila and Jakarta."

Controversy hit the 22-year-old British pop star this week when he was pictured with his arm around a girl in a nightclub.

The picture sparked worldwide speculation that he had been cheating on his fiance, Little Mix starlet, Perrie Edwards.

The pair have been engaged since 2013.

"I'm 22 years old ... I love a girl named Perrie Edwards. And there's a lot of jealous [people] in this world I'm sorry for what it looks like x," he wrote to fans on Twitter about the snap on Wednesday.

The news that Malik was signed off the tour has shaken One Directioners the world over, as they now fear the band's time as a five-piece may be nearing an end.

Bookmakers Paddy Power slashed the odds of the band calling it quits entirely to 3/1. It has also dramatically lowered the odds on One Direction releasing their next album as a four-man band.
