Ne-Yo has insisted he will only choose film roles that take him outside his comfort zone.
The singer and actor stars as a fighter-pilot in World War II movie Red Tails, and said he turns down parts which do not challenge him.
"I like to play roles that have little or nothing to do with my regular life. I get a lot of people coming to me with aspiring singer/songwriter roles and I'm like: 'Come on, that's like what I am now'," he told Metro.
"I told myself, if I'm going to do the acting thing then let's do the acting thing and not play it safe and take the roles that you can do because it's basically you playing yourself."
The Let Me Love You singer said music would always be his first love.
"I have had to turn down what had the potential to be some great roles because they wanted to shoot the movie around the same time as my album was coming out," he revealed.
"Even though I love acting, it's dwarfed by my unconditional love for music. I can't do a movie that takes me away for a year or two from my music. Not yet."
