'Whatever you think of Taylor, she did something beautiful for Jimmy' - Taylor Swift gives emotional performance for grieving Jimmy Fallon
Jimmy Fallon was reduced to tears following Taylor Swift's performance of New Year's Day on his show on Monday night.
Fallon cancelled all his shows last week after he suddenly lost his mother Gloria Fallon and Monday night was his first show back after her death.
The emotional host shared a story about his mother squeezing his hand three times to signify, 'I love you', when he was a child.
Swift, who was not scheduled to appear on the show agreed to perform her new track when invited by producers at the last minute.
At one point she changed the lyrics of 'New Year's Day', a track from her new album Reputation, to say, "Squeeze my hand three times in the back of the taxi."
Tonight Show write and producer Mike Cenzo wrote on Twitter, "She was not scheduled to do our show today. But we wanted something special for this first show back, so we asked her on a complete whim, since she had been in town doing SNL. She said yes with zero hesitation."
Of the emotional performance, he said, "I nearly gasped. Tears. I think everyone in the audience started sobbing. I could see Jimmy silhouetted at his desk dabbing his eyes with a tissue. We all lost it. It was a beautiful coincidence in a beautiful performance."
He added, "Whatever you think of Taylor, she did something beautiful for Jimmy and our show today, and we're forever grateful."
