Musician Tom Petty 'clinging to life' - LAPD earlier confirmed death but says information 'inadvertently' provided
US rocker Tom Petty is reported to be "clinging to life" after suffering a cardiac arrest.
CBS News had earlier reported that Petty (66) had died after life support was switched off following cardiac arrest on Sunday.
TMZ later reported, citing unidentified sources, that Petty was not expected to live much longer but was "still clinging to life."
The LAPD said on Twitter: "The LAPD has no information about the passing of singer Tom Petty.
"Initial information was inadvertantly (sic) provided to some media sources.
"However, the LAPD has no investigative role in this matter.
"We apologize for any inconvenience in this reporting."
Representatives for the singer did not return calls for comment or confirmation on Petty's condition.
