IT became the anthem of a generation when it was released at the turn of the millennium.

Now ‘Maniac 2000’ has returned to the top of the charts in a feat DJ Mark McCabe has described as “hilarious”.

The fourth best-selling single in Irish history reached number one on iTunes today following a push by ‘The Nicky Byrne Show’ on RTE 2FM.

It comes two days after the song celebrated its 15th anniversary on Wednesday.

Following its release in March 2000, the song spent ten weeks at the top of the charts.

The track is a medley of the 1983 song ‘Maniac’ by US musician Michael Sembello, and an instrumental club version by Irish rave act ‘4-Rhythm’, with new lyrics co-written by McCabe and Dublin DJ Al Gibbs.

McCabe, a 2FM DJ, reacted positively to the news on Twitter, stating: “Dudes! This is hilarious! Wow!”
