One Direction's Liam Payne has given Hometown's new single The Night We Met a plug on social media.

Payne (22) wrote the song with Louis Walsh's boyband and Jamie Scott and it's his first song to emerge outside of One Direction.

The One Direction star has 21.1m followers which provides a massive boost to the Irish boyband.

He wrote, "Hey everyone almost Christmas, check out this song I did with hometown and Jamie Scott...listen loud and enjoy!”

The tweet was retweeted 89,000 times and liked 120,000 times.

Given One Direction are taking an 18-month hiatus, there is more room in the boyband market for the Hometowners to flourish.

The newly-released song is heading for 100,000 views on YouTube.
