Liam Payne has released his first solo single - Strip That Down - since One Direction took their hiatus.

Co-written by Ed Sheeran and featuring Quavo from hip-hop group Migos, it sounds a little like N'Sync era Justin Timberlake.

However, it's not the song's sound that's piqued fans' interest, but rather the fact that Liam distances himself from One Direction in the track.

He says he has "come a long way" since the band and sings, "You know I used to be in 1D, not I'm out free" and it hasn't gone down well with 1D fans.

“I’ve been working hard in the studio for over a year and I’m really excited to share this new music with my amazing fans," he said of the single's release.

“I’ve come a long way since our One Direction debut and I hope everyone likes my new sound as much as I do.”

New dad (he has baby Bear with girlfriend Cheryl) Liam added, “2017 has been a big year for me already and I’m looking forward to what the rest of it will bring.”

However, while the song itself has gone down well, Liam's 1D comments have not as they fear he's hinting the band will never reuinite.
