Wicklow singer Hozier's breakthrough single 'Take Me To Church' has been named the most streamed and shared single of 2014 on music service Spotify.

To date, the song has been streamed over 87 million times.

It's an impressive number - but given Spotify only pay artists an average of $0.007 per stream this means Andrew Hozier-Byrne will have earned roughly $609, 000.

The 24-year-old singer was also named Spotify's Spotlight Breakout Star of 2014.

It has been an incredible year for the modest musician; his debut album went triple platinum in Ireland, he performed on stage at the world famous Victoria's Secret catwalk show, his single 'Take Me To Church' has more than 40 million hits on YouTube and last week, the single received a Grammy nomination in the Song of the Year category.

Hozier is the second Irish act ever to be nominated in this category after U2.

He will go up against Taylor Swift's pop anthem 'Shake It Off', Meghan Trainor's hit 'All About That Bass', Sia's 'Chandelier', and Sam Smith's melancholy single 'Stay with Me'.
