It's one of the catchiest tunes of 1999 but you may well have found yourself singing along and then wondering if you had been inadvertently singing about abuse.

An 18-year-old Britney Spears, decked out in pigtails and school uniform, appeared to be asking her boyfriend to slap her in 'Hit Me Baby One More Time.'

Others assumed the lyrics suggested S&M, but neither interpretation sat comfortably with most people.

However, it has now been revealed that there's an altogether more innocent explanation for the lyrics.

Author of The Song Machine, John Seabrook, explains that the Swedish writers of the track, Max Martin and Rami Yacoub, thought that 'hit' was teen slang for 'call'.

So, what Brit is really asking for is a phonecall from her boyfriend.

Even so, Jive Records still changed the name of the song to 'Baby One More Time'.

And TLC, who were originally offered the song, turned it down because they were not impressed by the chorus apparently asking a guy to hit them.
