Ed Sheeran has revealed that Irish comedian Tommy Tiernan will feature in his upcoming video for Galway Girl.

The 26-year-old star shot scenes in Galway on Monday and Tuesday night and drew a massive crowd of fans to both locations.

Speaking on 98FM's Big Breakfast on Thursday he said, "Tommy Tiernan is in the video as well and he said, 'Does this happen a lot?' and I was like 'No. I shot a video in my hometown in Suffolk and it was literally nothing near what happened in Galway.  I do think it's an Irish thing. There's no place in the world like Ireland for me."

Speaking about the origins of the song, he said, "I tried Portlaoise Girl, tried Limerick Girl, tried Cork Girl.  It just doesn't sing as well as Galway Girl."

Reports have suggested the song was written about Niamh Dunne, a member of the band Beoga, but Ed said this is not strictly true.

"She's married to another friend of mine who's also in Beoga," he explained.  "I never really said this song is about her. I was with Beoga and the first line I came up with was 'She played the fiddle in an Irish band' but the rest isn't about her.  People just ran away with this idea that it's about this girl."

The star, who played the first of two sold-out shows at the 3ARena on Wednesday night, also revealed that he had met the original Galway Girl about whom Steve Earl wrote that song, and that she also features in his new video.

Having already appeared in Home and Away and The Bastard Executioner, Ed is gearing up for a brief appearance in TV hit Game of Thrones.

He filmed a scene with Maisie Williams - who plays Arya Stark in the series - over just one day.

"I basically did it really secretively because I wanted my mates to watch it and be like, 'He should have told us that he was in it' but I actually bumped into one of my friends that night with the cast and he was like, 'What are you doing here?' and I was like, 'Eh, visiting family' and he was like, 'Oh yeah, how come you're with all the Game of Thrones cast?'"
