George Michael died of natural causes, a coroner has confirmed.

The music icon died of natural causes - dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver - Darren Salter, senior coroner for Oxfordshire has said.

The singer died aged 53 on Christmas Day at his home in Goring-on-Thames.

Thames Valley Police initially said that his death was unexplained but not suspicious.

An initial post-mortem examination was "inconclusive".

The coroner said in a statement: "Inquires into the death of George Michael have been concluded and the final post-mortem report received.

Pop superstar George Michael has died peacefully at home, his publicist said. The 53-year-old, who was set to release a documentary in 2017, rose to fame as a member of Wham!, known for their hits Club Tropicana and Last Christmas.

"As there is a confirmed natural cause of death, being dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis and fatty liver, the investigation is being discontinued and there is no need for an inquest or any further enquiries.

"No further updates will be provided and the family requests the media and public respect their privacy."
