The Military Wives Choir has marched to the top of the album chart with the debut record, the Official Charts Company said.

In My Dreams has earned the much coveted number one spot two weeks after it was released.

The title track of the album sees former X Factor hopeful Jonjo Kerr joining the ranks of the choir.

Kerr, from Chorley, is guest vocalist on the track In My Dreams. The song is a romantic duet, sung by a man who is parted from his lover overseas. He will be celebrating the achievement in Afghanistan where he is serving as a private in 3rd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment.

The wives topped the Christmas singles chart with their song Wherever You Are under the guidance of mentor Gareth Malone who put the group together for a BBC Two series. The choir pipped Kerr's X Factor rivals Little Mix, who won the talent show, to take the festive top spot.

Elsewhere in the album chart, Emeli Sande took second place with Our Version Of Events, while songstress Adele's 21 was in at number three. Soulful Michael Kiwanuka was highest new entry with debut album Home Again, entering the chart in fourth place.

In the singles chart, Gotye has notched up a fifth week at the top of the charts with his smash hit Somebody That I Used To Know.

Nicki Minaj's Starships is at number two and former X Factor winner Alexandra Burke's single Elephant, featuring Erick Morillo, was the highest new entry at number three.

Sande's Next To Me dropped two places to number four and Flo Rida's Wild Ones, featuring Sia, took fifth place.
