Miley Cyrus has revealed that she wants to be a mentor to Justin Bieber so he stays on the straight and narrow.

The We Can't Stop star, who has made headlines for her controversial performance with Robin Thicke at the MTV Video Music Awards, said she longs to pass on her tips to the Canadian singer, who lives near her.

"I'm not much older than him, so I never want it to feel like I'm mentoring him. But I do mentor him in a way," she told Rolling Stone.

"Because I've been doing this s*** for a long time, and I already transitioned, and I don't think he's quite done it yet."

Justin's recent troubles include allegations of nightclub brawls, urinating in restaurant buckets and appearing in naked videos as well as scraps with the paparazzi.

Miley - who went topless for the magazine's cover - defended the 19-year-old, saying: "He's trying really hard. People don't take him seriously, but he really can play the drums, he really can play guitar, he really can sing.

"I just don't want to see him f*** that up, to where people think he's Vanilla Ice. I tell him that. Like, 'You don't want to become a joke. When you go out, don't start s***. Don't come in shirtless.'

"But the thing is, I think boys are seven years behind. So in his head, he's really 12," the 20-year-old added.

Miley, who has split from actor Liam Hemsworth, said she is friends with Kanye West after they collaborated on a remix for his song Black Skinhead.

"I kind of have a good relationship with him now. It's good to have someone you can call and be like, 'Yo, do you think I should wear this?' That's what homies are supposed to do."
