Lady Gaga made better music before she hit superstardom, Grandmaster 'Melle Mel' Flash has claimed.

The 51-year-old hip-hop star, best known for being the lead rapper and main songwriter for Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five, collaborated with the singer on two tracks in 2006, when she was still known as Stefani Germanotta.

"Actually, the stuff that we did, I thought it's better than the stuff she does now," he said.

Melle, who performed with the singer on World Family Tree and The Fountain of Truth, revealed that he always knew she would hit the big time - but had no idea of who she would become.

"I always knew she was going to be famous, I didn't know she was going to be Lady Gaga famous," he said.

The rapper, whose real name is Melvin Glover, added: "She was always talented, she was a very nice girl and she was definitely very talented."

Melle features in Ice-T's directorial debut, Something From Nothing: The Art Of Rap, which is out now.
