Mary's album keeps tills ringing

Ken Sweeney Entertainment Editor

IT is nearly a year ago since she checked out of Till 40 to pursue her singing dream. But the cash tills of Tesco in Ballyfermot have remained good to 'X Factor' star Mary Byrne by ringing over 1,000 sales of her debut album.

'Mine & Yours' is outselling rivals by 10 to one at the shop where she was once employed.

"Music wasn't a particularly big seller in Ballyfermot until Mary's album came in," a Tesco spokesman told the Irish Independent.

The album of cover versions has outsold new releases from Britney Spears and Radiohead, and this week knocked Adele's album '21' off the top spot in the Irish charts. Some 20,000 copies have been sold here alone, with half of those sold through Tesco.

"I want to thank everyone who supported me and bought the album, I really appreciate it," said the mother of one.

Byrne's next Irish show will be in Aviva Stadium on June 25 when she performs as a support act for Neil Diamond.
