Madonna has said she felt "incarcerated" while wed to Guy Ritchie but revealed she is open to marrying again.
The star, who caused a sensation when she fell on stage during her Brits performance last month, was married to the British film director for eight years before the couple divorced in 2008.
Speaking to the Sun's Bizarre column, the 56-year-old suggested there was a "conflict" between the two over her career.
"I think when you get married, you have to be willing to make compromises and that's fair enough. However, I did find myself in a state of conflict," she told the paper.
"There were many times when I wanted to express myself as an artist in ways that I don't think my ex-husband felt comfortable with. There were times I felt incarcerated. I wasn't really allowed to be myself.
"It doesn't mean that marriage is a bad thing. But if you're an artist, you've got to find someone who accepts who you are and is comfortable with that."
The Material Girl singer, when asked if she would marry again, said "never say never".
The pair had a son together, named Rocco, 14, and also adopted two children from Malawi, son David Banda and daughter Mercy, while Madonna has a daughter, Lourdes, from a previous relationship.
In 2011, the Sherlock director said marriage to the singer was a "positive experience".
But he said: "I stepped into a soap opera, and I lived in it for quite a long period of my life. I'll probably be more eloquent on it 10 years from now."
