Love blooms for far-flung couple on Dervish site
A MUTUAL grá for Irish traditional group Dervish sparked a love affair between a couple which blossomed on the band's website.
American Martin Di Maria and his Portuguese wife Catarina, who are both teachers, are preparing to celebrate their first wedding anniversary on Valentine's Day.
But the couple, separated by thousands of miles, would never have known of each other's existence had Martin not begun answering questions that Catarina had posted on the Sligo group's website eight years ago.The couple began emailing each other as friends before feelings took a more romantic turn. They met for the first time in Ireland in 2006.
"Without Dervish we would have never known the other existed. We were separated by an ocean, from two different countries, two different cultures but through our love of traditional Irish music we met," Martin told the Irish Independent from their home in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Dervish recently met Martin and Catarina for the first time in Albany NY.
Founder member and accordion player Shane Mitchell said the band were delighted to have played a role in bringing the couple together.
