THE annual Meteor Choice Music Prize was won by Dublin band Jape last night for their album 'Ocean of Frequency (Music is for Losers)'.
The electronic rock outfit, fronted by singer Richie Egan, were announced as winners at The Olympia Theatre in Dublin.
Formed as a side project by Mr Egan while part of The Redneck Manifesto, Jape have released four albums to date -- 'Cosmosphere' (2003), 'The Monkeys in the Zoo have more Fun than Me' (2004), 'Ritual' (2008) and 'Ocean of Frequency' (2011).
Earlier, each nominated act had performed while the 11 judges -- made up of professionals and industry experts -- gathered in the nearby Morgan Hotel.
Frames singer Glen Hansard was among well-known musicians who attended the event.
Earlier, the winner of the Meteor Choice Music Prize Irish Song of the Year -- decided by the public -- was announced as Royseven for the song 'We Should Be Lovers'.
Jape received a cheque for €10,000 -- provided by the Irish Music Rights Organisation and the Irish Recorded Music Association -- as well as a specially-commissioned award, courtesy of the Recorded Artists Actors Performers.
