Irish grandparents helped Ed Sheeran to top

Ed Sheeran's accent might not match his red hair but his Irish roots are very genuine.

His grandparents hailed from Gorey in Wexford and he credits Damien Rice with inspiring him to become a singer-songwriter.

However, it was far from a case of 'straight to the top'. Last year he spoke about being homeless for two years and at one point sleeping rough outside Buckingham Palace.

Then in 2010 he was spotted playing an open mic session in Los Angeles by actor Jamie Foxx, who offered him the use of his recording studio.

His big break came with 'The A Team' and continued with hits like 'Lego House'.

He was the star of December's 'Late Late Toy Show' after turning up as a surprise guest.

On Wednesday, he won 'Best Male Solo Artist' and 'Album of the Year' at the Brit Awards.
