'I find it very hard to be in the world without that kind of company' - U2's Bono on his wife Ali
U2's Bono has revealed one of the songs on the band’s new album is about his wife Ali Hewson.
This week marks the anniversary for when he and Ali started dating.
Landlady, the first song on side three of U2’s 14th album, Songs of Experience, is about Ali. But it's not a sentimental love song, Bono told 2fm’s Eoghan McDermott.
"I just don't want to write her an obnoxious, sentimental song - she deserves better than that."
“This week a long time ago I started to date this girl who was in Mount Temple, Ali Stewart, and it was the same week I joined U2. It was a very, very good week. I find it very hard to be in the world without that kind of company.”
The singer, who believes his voice has gotten better with age, explained that he recently had a nightmare where all his family disappeared.
“It sounds kind of preposterous but I genuinely had this moment when I woke up in a panic and I had this fear, I felt 'oh, all my family has left me,' and I was on my own somewhere... it was one of those mad kind of dreams – a nightmare.”
“I went downstairs and I met Ali and I said, 'God, I’ve had this terrible moment' and she’s like ‘ah yeah’, and pats me on the head, and said ‘ah yeah that’s great. What do you want for breakfast?’”
Bono also joked that he’s experimenting with watching Chef’s Table in the hope that it’ll make him a more “chilled-out person”.
“I’ve been experimenting on being a more chilled-out person, and I’ve been asking people for hints. And someone said watch Netflix.”
“I’m a changed man,” he joked. “I’ve seen Stranger Things – I like that too.”
U2 are gearing up to release their 14th album next month.
The album has been billed as "a collection of songs in the form of intimate letters to places and people close to the singer's heart; family, friends, fans, himself".
The band released the video for the album's lead single You're The Best Thing About Me in September.
