Hollywood star Brendan Gleeson to tour Ireland as ‘trad musician’ next year
HOLLYWOOD actor Brendan Gleeson is to tour Ireland as a traditional musician next year.
The ‘Gangs of New York’ star will set out with a group of artists in early 2014, to perform in a string of towns across the country as part of the Music Network’s forthcoming event line-up.
Music Network tours are funded by the Arts Council and are presented in association with RTÉ lyric fm, helping to bring Irish audiences the chance to experience the best of live music at affordable prices.
Gleeson, who has enjoyed roles in box office hits including ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Braveheart’, needs no introduction to audiences, but it is less well known that the Dubliner is a highly-accomplished fiddle player.
He will perform alongside Dirk Powell, who plays the accordion and five-string banjo, as well as uilleann pipes player Michael McGoldrick and guitarist Francis Gaffney, from January 7 to 17 as they put on shows across Dublin, Galway, Cork and Kildare.
Gleeson met Powell on the set of the Oscar-winning movie ‘Cold Mountain’ in 2003 and since formed a friendship with the multi-instrumentalist.
The tour will provide a brief break from the movie set for father-of-four Gleeson, who is currently filming 'In The Heart of The Sea' with Cillian Murphy.
Directed by silver screen veteran Ron Howard, the story is based on the book by Nathaniel Philbrick, which follows the real-life tale of the survivors of the Nantucket whaling ship the Essex.
Gleeson is also scheduled to take on his first role in a US TV series, after being cast as a corrupt media mogul in 'The Money'.
HBO has given the green light to the pilot of the new drama, which will centre on Gleeson's character James Castman.
Former ‘Love/Hate’ actress Ruth Negga has been cast as Erin Foley, a senior news editor who reports to Castman.
Fans will next see Gleeson on-screen next spring, with the cinematic release of 'Calvary'.
The film reunited ex secondary school teacher Gleeson with the director of 'The Guard', John Michael McDonagh.
Tickets for Gleeson’s concerts are available from individual venues around the country and can be purchased by calling Music Network on (01) 475 0224 or booking online at www.musicnetwork.ie.
