Guitar legend to rock O2 arena
GUITAR legend Brian May will grace the O2 stage next weekend as he joins the cast of 'We Will Rock You' for a suitably rocking finale.
With his famous mop of hair, the 61-year-old axeman will take to the stage to mark the last of 12 shows in Dublin and also the final night of a year-long tour.
"There's a line in 'We Will Rock You' -- 'No one but the hairy man shall play the mighty one's guitar' -- and that is exactly what will happen on the final night in Dublin," said a spokeswoman for the 02 shows last night.
Featuring 24 of Queen's greatest hits, 'We Will Rock You' is a futurist adventure set in a time when live music is banned on earth and the all-powerful Globalsoft Corporation feeds kids a diet of synthesised pop.
Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor had been working on the idea of a Queen musical for nearly a decade but it wasn't until the pair met actor and director Robert De Niro at the Venice Film Festival in 1996 that the idea finally came to fruition.
"He just had a feeling it would work," said May. "It's largely thanks to him that we got ourselves into gear."
"He said, 'Just do it and I will match you dollar for dollar for any development costs you have.' And he stuck with it."
Written and directed by the comedian Ben Elton, the original production is currently in its eighth year at the Dominion Theatre in London's West End and has been seen worldwide by four million people.
