Selena Gomez struggled to control her emotions as she accepted one of the top gongs at the Teen Choice Awards.

The former Disney star was presented with the Ultimate Choice Award at the star-studded ceremony, and at 22 was the youngest person to be given that prize.

Selena - who spent time in rehab earlier this year, although it wasn't for substance abuse - thanked her fans as she addressed the audience at the show in Los Angeles.

"I have to be honest - especially this month - I cannot thank you guys enough," said the Come And Get It singer.

"You remind me, amidst all the stuff that we deal with personally, what's important, and that's giving and loving and caring about each other.

"I'm not trying to preach or any of that. It's just that you guys make me better, and I just really appreciate everything that you've done."

Surfboard trophies were handed out in movie, TV and music categories at the glitzy event.

Other stars who attended included Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, Jason Derulo, Lea Michele and Chloe Moretz, with the 17-year-old showing off her mature sense of style in a red and black shorts, top and jacket combo.

Kim Kardashian, who wore a black leather crop top and zebra-printed skirt, was one of the darlings of the red carpet and was also among the winners, with her reality show Keeping Up With The Kardashians being crowned Choice TV: Reality Show.

Shailene Woodley's film The Fault In Our Stars was one of the big winners in the movie categories, while former US X Factor judge Demi Lovato, Iggy Azalea, Ed Sheeran and One Direction took home prizes in the music categories.

Demi opened the show with former UK X Factor contestant Cher Lloyd, with the pair performing Really Don't Care, which picked up the award for Choice Summer Song.

One Direction won several surfboards including Choice Music Group and the Twitter award, which saw them beat fellow social media favourites Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, Katy Perry and Ian Somerhalder.

However, Ian was still a winner, scooping Choice TV Actor: Sci-Fi/Fantasy for The Vampire Diaries.

His co-star and former girlfriend Nina Dobrev took home the female version of the award.

Other TV winners included The Big Bang Theory, Pretty Little Liars, The Simpsons and The Voice.

The Teen Choice Awards were hosted by Sarah Hyland and Tyler Posey.
