Freddie Fox has confessed he knew nothing about Culture Club before prepping for his role in Worried About The Boy.

The BBC Two drama tells the story of the young Boy George and his early days in the 80s pop band, but Freddie - who plays New Romantics pop star Marilyn - was only born in 1989.

"When I was auditioning for this, I didn't know Culture Club - I'd heard lots of their songs by 90s groups that vanished but didn't realise it was their original stuff," he said.

But that has since changed, with Freddie adding: "I love them - I've now got this enormous playlist of Culture Club on my iPod now. The music's amazing. And it's survived, it's lasted, it's been covered 800 trillion times."

Acting newcomer Freddie, who has appeared in St Trinian's 2: The Legend Of Fritton's Gold, is thrilled he managed to bag the part.

"It was an honour, a bit of a risk from the people who gave it to me," he said.

"I was an unknown quantity and to an extent, I still am. It was a great excitement because he's [Marilyn] very different to the person I am and yet you just have to find it within you, as much of the similarities as you possibly can."

:: Worried About The Boy is on BBC Two on May 16.
