Festivals get in the swing of summer

THE summer jazz festival programmes are out, and it's time to start planning. Let's take a look at who's playing at the main European events.

Sonny Rollins, on his "80th birthday tour", is one of the headliners of the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam and Molde Jazz in Norway.

His actual birthday is not until September, but a detail like that wouldn't bother the "Saxophone Colossus", 54 years after his album of that name. Another octogenarian playing at the North Sea is the Seventies "free jazz" pioneer Ornette Coleman. The three-day festival -- July 9, 10 and 11 -- offers a bewildering choice, including Dianne Reeves, Pat Metheny, Bobby Hutcherson and Buddy DeFranco.

Coleman is also at the Nice festival, July 17-24. Jazz a Juan, in Antibes Juan-les-Pins, runs from July 14-25, with Joshua Redman and Roy Hargrove.

The Jazz in Marciac Festival lasts from July 30 to August 15. Ahmad Jamal, Wynton Marsalis, Diana Krall and Chick Corea are some of the major names appearing.

The Sligo International Summer School and Jazz Festival takes place from July 20-25, with Bill Carrothers (piano), Anita Wardell (vocals) and Michael Nielsen (guitar).

A new singer, Jenna Harris, plays tonight in JJ Smyth's, backed by Nick Roth (saxophone), Shane Latimer (guitar), Derek Whyte (bass) and Matt Jacobson (drums).
