A strand of Elvis Presley's hair has failed to sell at auction.

It was hoped the piece of the King's hair would fetch up to £600, but it failed to meet its reserve price.

The rock'n'roll memorabilia was being sold by a music fan from Gloucestershire who bought the strand "on a whim" through a TV auction.

It was mounted in the centre of a gold disc inscribed The King's Authentic Hair, together with a photograph of the singer and a certificate of authenticity on the reverse.

A spokesman for Chorleys, the auctioneers selling the item, said: "These more fun items are not doing as well in the current market as the more serious antiques. It's just one of those things."

A clump of Elvis's hair sold at auction in Chicago for 15,000 dollars in October last year.
