Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran announced his engagement to girlfriend Cherry Seaborn yesterday.

Ed (26) confirmed the good news by posting a picture of the couple kissing, his fiancee beaming brightly.

"Got myself a fiancee just before New Year. We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well xx," Ed wrote.

Ed met Cherry at Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham, Suffolk, where the star is believed to have had a crush on his classmate. Years later, they started a long-distance relationship, while Cherry was in the US, before she eventually moved back to the UK to be with the multimillionaire star.

Ed explained how everything was easier with his girlfriend by his side:

"That side of my life is meant to be the part that chills you out, and it definitely is," he said. "This is actually the first time I've been away and I'm just chilled, and nothing's going wrong and everything's great."

On how she inspired the song Perfect, he said the lyrics came out of a wild night the pair enjoyed in his friend James Blunt's house in Ibiza: "We got really hammered and took our shoes off and danced on his lawn and then jumped in the pool. And then the next day I was like, 'that's a cool story', so I put it in a song."

Before Ed settled down with Cherry, he spoke openly about how he had gradually started to slip into unhealthy habits.

"I didn't really notice it was happening. It just started gradually happening, and then some people took me to one side and were like, 'Calm yourself down'," he recalls. "It's all fun to begin with, it all starts off as a party and then you're doing it on your own and it's not, so that was a wake-up call to taking a year off."

The songwriter added: "I never touched anything. I started slipping into it, and that's why I took a year off and buggered off."

A date for the wedding has yet to be announced.
