Doris Day is oldest artist to have top 10 album of new material
Doris Day has become the oldest artist in UK chart history to have an album of previously unreleased songs in the top 10.
“My Heart” has entered the album charts at number nine.
It was the 87-year-olds first album of as yet unheard material for almost 20 years. It features 12 tracks recorded between 1951 and 1994.
This comes 66 years since her first hit as a vocalist on Sentimental Journey by Les Brown and the Band of Renown, which coincided with the end of the Second World War in Europe in 1945 and 62 years after her debut solo album release, “You're My Thrill”.
She said: “I was asked to choose the songs I preferred for the album; these are the tunes that reflect my love of animals, my love for my son. They're the dearest things to My Heart." Another veteran act, the Beatles, entered the charts at number 6 with a re-mastered version of their singles compilation, entitled “1”.
Dame Vera Lynn was 92 when she had a number 1 album in 2009, but that was a greatest hits compilation.
A second veteran act has also entered this week's Official Albums Chart Top 10. The re-mastered digipack edition of The Beatles eight-times platinum singles compilation album "1" is straight in at number six .
