Dame Vera Lynn has added her voice to a campaign in support of BBC Music.

The 98-year-old Forces' Sweetheart is backing UK Music's campaign to convince decision-makers that diminishing any BBC music services would not be in the public's interest.

An online petition urging the Government to protect BBC music services from cuts has more than 10,000 signatures .

Dame Vera said: "The BBC has been filling the hearts of the nation with joy through music for as long as I can remember. We therefore must protect it now, so that it may do the same for future generations."

In backing the #LetItBeeb campaign, she joins others including Sam Smith, Brian Eno, Coldplay, Sting, Seal, Annie Lennox, Katherine Jenkins, Chrissie Hynde, Boy George, George Ezra, New Order, James Bay and Paloma Faith.

Hynde said: "Having spent the first 22 years of my life in the States, I am constantly reminded and amazed by what a boost to the culture the BBC is here.

"And, having travelled extensively over the last 40 years, I can be sure that the BBC has no rival anywhere. I am always glad to come back to it."

Lennox said: "I'm indebted to the BBC for countless influences in all kinds of ways, but I'm especially grateful for Top Of The Pops, which was broadcast every Thursday night. If it hadn't been for that fantastic show, I don't know whether I'd have become a performer."

The BBC's Royal Charter, due to expire in 2016, is currently under Government review, and Culture, Media and Sport Secretary John Whittingdale sparked fears that the BBC would be scaled back when he said the review would look at whether the corporation should continue to be ''all things to all people'' or have a more ''precisely targeted'' mission.
