What not to miss this week

The nostalgia trip

Turn

These hard-charging indie rockers were one of Ireland's favourite bands for a considerable stretch of the 90s. Alas, they never broke through internationally and so inevitably petered out. They dust down their angst-slathered grunge-pop for a Christmas comeback. Tuesday, Whelan's, Dublin

The one for Frozen fans

The Snow Queen

Every eight-year-old girl's favourite movie was inspired by the Hans Christian Andersen fairytale. Now the original story receives a makeover from playwright Ian Toner, with song and dance numbers and cameos by pirates and killer whales. Today, 2.30pm and 7.30pm, Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin

The Christmas movie

It's A Wonderful Life

Frank Capra's 1946 tale of love, grace and Christmas joy is routinely trotted out as the greatest seasonal movie ever. But the cliche holds up, with James Stewart heartbreaking as a dutiful everyman whose soaring ambitions never quite come to pass. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll walk out at peace with the world and appreciative of the important people in your life. Tonight, 6.30pm, Triskel Arts Centre, Cork

The podcast

Lore

Christmas is prime podcast listening season and here's one guaranteed to induce shivers through the long, cold nights. Billed as a "true horror" series, Aaron Mahnke delves each week into a creepy aspect of what he describes as dark folklore. The stories he uncovers are uniquely disturbing - even more so because they actually happened.

The TV show

Doctor Who Christmas Special

Christmas TV can sometimes feel like a high-fat snooze fest, but Doctor Who pulls out all the stops this year with the introduction of a Batman-esque superhero, The Ghost, with whom the dimension-hopping Time Lord hooks up in New York for a seasonal romp.

Sunday, 5.45pm, BBC One

The box-set

The Man In The High Castle, Season Two

Amazon Video is finally available in Ireland and a good thing too as series two of this gripping alternative history drama has just arrived. Having lost the Second World War, America is under the boot-heel of a dictatorial demagogue with silly hair. Thank goodness it could never happen in real life...
