Courtney Love has declared her debut in new stage musical Kansas City Choir Boy to be a "baptism of fire".

The 50-year-old Hole rocker plays Athena, a singer who leaves her songwriter sweetheart to chase fame in the big city, in the show co-starring writer Todd Almond, which is about to open in New York.

Courtney performed a preview for The New York Times and revealed that while she is nervous about her performance, if it is a success she hopes to take the production on tour.

She told the newspaper: "It's like putting out a single. If it gets catchy, then we do it in London or something. If it doesn't, it doesn't. We think it's really catchy and fabulous.

"I've never done musical theatre - I really wanted to do theatre, but probably I'm not ready to do a play quite yet," she said in voluble bursts. "Fortuitously, Todd wrote this thing eight years ago, and I met him and I fell in love with it.

"It's baptism by fire, but I'm going to hang in and give it my best."

Courtney revealed the role had come along at a time when she had started to feel jaded by life on the road as a solo artist.

She said: "I got to that part where I'm looking down at the set list going, really, Malibu next?

"Are we halfway done yet? And when that happens in rock 'n' roll, it's like, Okay, I've got to look at something else. Because I'm not loving this. I'm not in the moment. Forget persona, forget who's new and who's old, your mojo is your mojo. This is giving me real mojo and challenges that hopefully aren't too hard."

However Courtney is set to go on tour with Lana Del Rey later this year, and also has other acting roles in the pipeline, including an appearance in Empire, the TV series about the music business created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong.

She laughed: "I play a rock star with a drug problem. And the research I have to do - it's so tough for me!"

Kansas City Choir Boy is set to run at the performance space Here in New York from January 8 to January 17.
