Carrie Underwood is set to make her feature film debut.

The country music singer and former American Idol winner has signed up with Dennis Quaid and Helen Hunt to star in the indie drama Soul Surfer, about teen surfing champ and shark attack survivor Bethany Hamilton, according to Variety.

The story is based on Bethany's autobiography and is directed by Sean McNamara.

It centres on the story of the surf icon, played by AnnaSophia Robb, who defied all odds to compete and win professional championships after losing her arm in a shark attack at the age of 13.

Dennis and Helen play Bethany's parents, and Carrie has taken on the role of a church youth leader.

Soul Surfer began shooting this week in Hawaii.
