Bruno Mars has dominated the digital download charts racking up the top two biggest selling singles of the year.
His number one, Just The Way You Are, sold 12.5 million copies around the world in 2011.
The singer's hit, Grenade, was the second biggest digital seller with 10.2 digital copies sold.
The next biggest seller was LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem which sold 9.7 million, while Adele's Rolling In The Deep sold 8.2 million.
Mars also had another single in the top 10 with The Lazy Song which sold 6.5 million copies.
The sales figures were released in the annual digital musical report published today by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).
It found music fans are downloading more digital music than ever before with single track downloads up by 11% and album downloads up by 24%.
A total of 3.6 billion downloads were paid for around the world last year and the number of people paying to subscribe to a digital music service climbed by 65% to 13.4 million, according to the IFPI.
Its CEO Frances Moore said: "As we enter 2012, there are good reasons for optimism in the world of digital music. Legal services with expanding audiences have reached across the globe and consumer choice has been revolutionised. Meanwhile momentum is building in the fight against piracy as governments and a growing circle of intermediaries engage with our industry.
"Any complacency now, however, would be a great mistake. Our digital business is progressing in spite of the environment in which it operates, not because of it. In 2012 the momentum needs to build further. We need legislation from governments with co-ordinated measures that deal with piracy effectively and in all its forms. We also need more co-operation from online intermediaries such as search engines and advertisers to support the legal digital music business."
Record companies pulled in 5.2 billion US dollars (£3.3 billion) from digital sales but the report found piracy remains a problem with more than one in four (28%) internet users regularly accessing illegal services.
