Boyzone - BZ20

As its title hints, this album acknowledges the fact that Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch and Mikey Graham were first put together 20 years ago.

Original svengali Louis Walsh may be long out of the picture, but the Boyzone of 2013 still feels as ill-matched as ever. Since the untimely death of Stephen Gately, there's even more of an onus on Keating to carry the group. Duffy gamely tries to contribute, but his efforts are pedestrian at best, and both Lynch and Graham remain passengers with practically nothing to offer.

Boyzone have long had a thing for schmaltz, and so it continues here, with several toe-curlingly naff songs about the restorative powers of love. Opening track Love Will Save the Day,is a case in point, with Keating delivering his lines as if on autopilot. There's none of the spark that's to be found in Take That's second coming (but then, there was precious little spark in Boyzone's late 1990s heyday either).
