Beguiling take on French chansons
Amours Toujours Etc
Caroline Moreau is a French chanteuse and Dublin resident who has been a familiar face on Ireland's live circuit since 2002.
This new album sees her exploring the darker, rawer side of chanson as well as traditional French folk songs and sea shanties.
Moreau's voice is a thing of beauty, especially when tackling the more delicate, intimate songs and the accompaniments – be they sparse or lively – are always at the service of her beguiling vocal. A heart-rending love song Ne Me Quitte Pas works beautifully and there's something deeply evocative about Oblivion, which was penned by the late Argentinian tango composer Astor Piazzolla.
Ill-advisedly, she takes on Edith Piaf's signature song, Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien. It has been covered so often that it's lost most of its original potency and Moreau's playful take has none of the defiance or lustiness of Piaf's celebrated version.
