Barry Manilow (73) comes out as gay and reveals boyfriend of 39 years
Singer Barry Manilow has opened up about his sexuality, coming out as gay and revealing his boyfriend of 39 years.
Best known for hits including Mandy and Copacabana, Manilow has always been famously private about his personal life.
While many fans were aware of his sexuality, the singer felt he would be 'disappointing' his fan base if he came out.
Speaking to People magazine, he said, "I thought I would be disappointing them if they knew I was gay. So I never did anything.
The singer's partner is his manager Garry Kief. They met in 1978 and he has been president of Barry Manilow Productions since then.
"I knew that this was it. I was one of the lucky ones. I was pretty lonely before that," he said of their relationship.
The couple married in 2014 on their Palm Springs estate although they did not speak publicly about their marriage.
"When they found out that Garry and I were together, they were so happy. The reaction was so beautiful - strangers commenting, 'Great for you!' I'm just so grateful for it."
Manilow had previously married Susan Deixler following his graduation from high school.
He is still performing and will release his latest album This is My Town on April 21.
