Barbra Streisand hosts fundraiser
Barbra Streisand opened her doors to host a star-studded fundraiser for women's heart health.
The music star performed four songs at the event at her Malibu compound, in front of guests including designer Donna Karan and actors Josh Brolin and Diane Lane. She sang a duet of Smile with Josh Groban.
Guests paid as much as 100,000 dollars per couple to attend the intimate fundraising dinner supporting the Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Centre at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre.
Barbra donated 10 million dollars to the new research and treatment facility and solicited million-dollar donations from wealthy friends she called personally.
The star said she was motivated to contribute to women's heart health because she "can't stand inequality, whether it's about civil rights, gay rights or gender discrimination".
Heart disease kills more women each year than all cancers combined, but most of the research on the disease for the past five decades has been conducted on men.
"Even in scientific research, women are still treated as second-class citizens," Barbra said, "and to me, that's just unacceptable."
Former US President Bill Clinton also attended and gave a speech.
