It has been a good start to the new year for singer Christy Dignam who has learned that his cancer treatment is working.

The Aslan frontman flew out to the UK this week where he was informed that numerous bouts of chemotherapy have been effective and his blood cancer is now decreasing.

However, his bandmates have warned that the Dublin singer still has a long way to go before he is completely in the clear.

"Christy has returned from the UK with the good news that his treatment is working well and he is now on the mend," read a statement on the band's Facebook page.

"There is still a long way to go with the recovery process, but, this good news has really given us all the best possible start to 2014."

Last year was a torrid one for Dignam, who underwent months a of intense chemotherapy to battle blood cancer.

The band thanked fans and well-wishers.

"We feel your support has helped carry us to where we are today and for that we are truly grateful," added the statement.

The 52-year-old was diagnosed with two types of blood cancer early last year and doctors told him he was lucky to be alive.

However, the singer continued to battle the illness and in June, he walked his daughter Kiera down the aisle for her wedding to Darren Moran. Kiera is due to give birth to her third child in March.

The band are now hoping, that all going well, they will all be together and rocking it out on stage in the near future.
