THE FIRST WAVE

(bodytonic)

Most side projects are second rate, but that's certainly not the case when it comes to Neil O'Connor – who is best known for his membership of those highly regarded home-grown post-rockers, The Redneck Manifesto. This is his fourth album under the Somadrone moniker and it's yet another excellent excursion in atmospheric electronica. O'Connor has spent three years working on this album and the intricately texted sounds he has coaxed from analogue and synthesized material speak of a master craftsman. The music is lushly atmospheric and best appreciated on headphones in the wee small hours. Listen to these eight tracks, and it's obvious why the album's working title was Nocturnes. O'Connor is in the form of his life here, especially on the life-affirming Pulse of Joy with vocals from David Kitt.
