One Direction breaks their silence over rumours the band is going on hiatus with Niall Horan confirming the group is taking “a well earned break".

Teenage dreams were shattered and hearts broken last night when it emerged that the boy band were taking a break.

On Sunday it was reported the four-piece will be going on an extended break in 2016 and will not tour their fifth album.

Confirming the news in a series of tweets, Irish charmer Niall Horan assured fans the band was not splitting up but instead taking a break.

Writing to his 23 million Twitter followers, the singer said: "Ok so lots of rumours going round. We are not splitting up, but we will be taking a well earned break at some point next year.

"Don't worry though, we still have lots we want to achieve! Can't wait for you to hear all the new music we have for you and to perform some new songs as the tour continues. Love you all."

The band - comprised of Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson - are set to take a year out to focus on their own solo projects and will not tour with their fifth album.

Yesterday a source told The UK Sun that the group "fully deserve to have at least a year to work on their own projects."

"The guys have been together for five years, which is an incredible run for any boy band.

"There is no bad blood between them and they are all 100pc behind the decision. It is definitely not a split and they fully intend to get back together at some time in the future."

It has been a testing few months for the band, with Zayn Malik sensationally quitting the band in March.

Soon after, it emerged that Louis Tomlinson was to become a father following a brief relationship with Briana Jungwirth.

It is believed that the band are simply no longer moving in 'One Direction' and they want to spend time focusing on their own personal and professional relationships and projects. Several weeks ago, Liam revealed that the group were desperately in need of some time out.

"You know, I think everyone needs a little bit of a break now and a sit down and a stop, to kind of take in all the great things that've happened," he said.

Pop band manager Louis Walsh said earlier this month that One Direction were on the way out.

Walsh previously managed Boyzone and Westlife.

He said One Direction had only one album left before they split and claimed that this was a reason for putting his latest group together - Hometown.
