One of the gigs of 2010 was the first of LCD Soundsystem's shows in Tripod in November. There's no doubting James Murphy's studio alchemy but, boy, can he turn it on live.
This album was conceived to sound like a John Peel session with Murphy and his long-term cohorts, including vocalist/keyboardist Nancy Whang, going into a London studio and performing a career-spanning selection as they would in front of the paying public.
Nine songs get the treatment and, in places, sound even better than the brilliant originals. Sound of Silver's standout, All My Friends, rams home its Steve Reich influences in thrilling fashion, while All I Want, the Bowie-esque masterpiece, from latest (and, we're told, final) studio album This is Happening, is even more urgent -- and heartbreaking.
