Music: The Big Roar by The Joy Formidable ***
What an apt title for this album, the Welsh trio's major-label debut. The sound is so huge it could drown out Arcade Fire at their most bombastic.
Unlike those Canadians, Ritzy Bryan et al occasionally struggle to coax magic from their mighty noise. Too often, their compositions are sucked into a vortex of grunge, shoegaze and emo and the tune is lost.
But when they marshal their ideas, their music truly is formidable. For evidence, look no further than the glorious Whirring -- a pulse-quickening riot of guitars, drums and Bryan's persuasive vocals -- and the seven-minute opener, the epic The Ever Changing Spectrum of a Lie.
